Is soil an essential element of organic farming? Or can a crop grown in a soil-free container still be considered organic?

Since the launch of the National Organic Program in 2000, hydroponic, aeroponic, and aquaponic crop systems have been eligible to use the coveted USDA Organic seal on their products, so long as their operations comply with all other USDA organic regulations.
