PRV doesn't pose risk to wild salmon

Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) has no impact on the respiratory systems of Atlantic salmon, and so is unlikely to affect the health of wild Pacific salmon passing close to farms, according to new research.

PRV is present in nearly all farmed Atlantic salmon on Canada's west coast, and various strains of PRV have been detected in many salmonid species around the world.

Wild salmon interests and conservationists have long expressed concerns that PRV emanating from salmon farms could impact wild fish passing by, but the scientists from the University of British Columbia (UBC) who undertook the study have said..........................................................................
